I had a few odds and ends questions about warring in the new era.
I already understand that it's medieval style with mostly draftees and militia, some ranks of infantry and elite soldiers. But:
Would an army have to contend with beasties and such in the field? Say a general is attempting to outflank some infantry by throwing his draftees against them and sending the dog cavalry around the back, and they come against, oh sweet pantheon a thunderbug! seems like an amazing new dynamic to battles. Would the generals try to choose somewhere fairly quiet? or keep battles as short as possible?
Relics a bit of a stretch here, but would it be possible that said general in a flying rage that his cavalry were slaughtered by a rampaging bug, instead opts to send out his one machinegun and a belt of precious ammo to gun down the enemy flank? Perhaps with elite soldiers two with a machinegun and another two with pavises
How opt are humanoids to become mercs? like warmorts being sent in to take out that machine gun from above.
Muskets, what are the advantage? a strong arm can make a crossbow much more devastating. Is there a plan to bring in the morale shock aspect to muskets?
Mutants, segregated or no? I'd say if you're attempting a proper pike phalanx, it would be tough if the guy next to you had a big blade arm rather than a regular arm and a shield.
Are dogs specifically a sort of cavalry, i see them as shock cavalry/light cavalry with draft horses taking up heavy cavalry.
I had a spur of the moment urge to make this thread and i probably have more questions, but i'll sleep on it and hope for some answers to these questions. Perhaps they're silly but as a military history nerd i'm basically falling in love with the idea of new model army style pike and shot formations fighting charging cyborgs with gun arms. Or a charge of the light brigade, intercepted by a skulking render. Perhaps the battle of waterloo, with mutants? hehehe.

They are cool as a hobby and if you have no rifling/breach loaders/actual bullets, it would work in a pinch. Muskets are a fairly cheap way to get troops to shoot a few shots with little training. It's also easier to pour lead into a mold than make an arrow. Just my thoughts.

I myself ran into this same question, however a simple solution dawned on me. I came up with the idea of have the the draftee's and militiamen with musket and bayonet only. The elite soldiers and calvary units have M1 Garande style rifles from ww1 and or English style ww1 revolvers. The M1 Garande has the same stats as the musket the only difference is the range, and a five round push in clip or in the case of the revolver a five round cylinder with speed loader as standard equipment. These are eclusive to the purist empire as they have the tech to produce the weapons and ammo. owever they are prized trophy items by DOA warriors and bandits alike. The ammo is hard to come by in DOA as it cannot be purchase which would promote trade with there hated enemy. Ammo can only be won through combat. In this way a successful DOA warrior can be gauged on how many M1 Garandes and ammo Clips he owns or has taken in combat agaisnt Purist empire elite forces.
aving started a campaign in the DOA, i realized that DOA warriors RAW have better armor and better close combat skills were as the Purists have weaker armor but only crossbows and musket. These weapons do equal damage as the longswords weilded by DOA warriors in close combat but at a distance if they hit. But since both the crossbow and musket have a one every three turn reload close combat with DOA forces is almost certain putting the purists at a big disadvantage since they have short swords as standard issue melee weapons. so i equaled out the playing field by slightly increasing their armor/reinforced studded leather and i gave conquistador officers, calvary, and elite soldiers M1 garandes and or Revolvers.
in my vision of the epoch muskets are still used because of the cost to create them and the limited ability to manufacture M1/revolvers. I see open warfare as a mix of civil war era weapons and ww1 weapons inevitably coming to grand melee at its peek.

I was planning on, if the party ever gets around to going into dominion territory, that a sudden purist breakout straight through mutant lines, and having various purist soldiers running wild through the countryside, having the players have to trek through the temporarily controlled land to get back to the safety of the north or south freehold. Though i like the DOA too much for it to be a permanent loss. I wonder if anyone's tried a purist game, it would probably be very uncomfortable for some, what with mutant baby killing, and lots of slaughtering. But it would be an interesting "other side of the fence" look Oh those stats are great! thanks!

Rexbannon, great solution to the issue. I give the HOPE limited tech; only the more experienced warriors will have true relic (automatic & energy) weapons. In my world, most of them are at the Revolution (http://www.nbc.com/revolution) medieval style of technology. Sword and board rule the day. But they are very skilled in melee. They have to be to contend with mutants! HOPE is not to be confused with the Purehold Republic (Shattered Region), which I see akin to the Brotherhood of Steel in Fallout.
Ecocola, my group wouldn't have a big problem with the atrocities. Especially if I place the violence on par with ridding the world of demons (freakish horrors), witches (ghost mutants) and mindless automatons seeking the damnation of souls.

The Holy Purist Empire is a bit tank in my world. These are some of the other Technologies they sport far be it in limited supplies with limited manufacturing capabilities:
M1 Garand Webley RIC Revolver Mk 1 Grenade (Pineapple frag) L10 Ranger Anti-Personnel Mines M1895 Colt-Browning Machine Gun Winchester Model 1887 Lever action Shotgun M1918 / Mk 1 Trench Knife
This is only a small list of what they have. In my Game, located in the HPE is a idg site to a massive WW1 Smithsonian collection of weapons. with documentaion on prodution and types of ammo.

What is it, 45 miles from Walsave to Pitford? According to RAW (rules as written), you'd never make it because of all the random encounters. On the other hand, you could drive it in about an hour. That many beasties in the field would force bands of troops to constantly push back nature just to survive. Maybe that's what they do, but it deserves more mention in the rules. 2. IMHO, warmots are the orcs of TME. They may very well take to the highest bidder, but where do they spend it? DOA? Like I've said before, we need stomping grounds for intelligent critters. 3. After working/fighting together, I feel they'll eventually develop tactics that work. The tactics might not change. It's just recognizing how to use the mutations and powers that be in a cohesive force. 4. Lord of the Rings did a pretty good job of dog mounts; Wargs. For "gene-mod"/selective breeding of animal traits in general, this is an excellent steampunk fiction book. www.amazon.com/Strange-Affair-Spring-Heeled-Swinburne/dp/1616142405

That's a pretty sweet machine! Earth Thump, Stun Pulse, etc. Dig a pit.. barbed wire might pop a tread. The old ones look like armored tractors, which was awesome in its day!
