I can't tell you how many times I've randomly rolled up a TME character that ends up with enough negative modifiers to appearance that it literally goes below zero. Just yesterday I rolled up a former logger moderate mutant that now has an appearance trait of -7. Should it actually just bottom out at 1? Would something or someone with a -7 appearance just be considered a monster by anyone who sees them?
Anyone else out there in the wasteland create a character with a seriously low (below zero) appearance trait? How do you handle it as a GM? My first thought would be to simply make them too hideous to be around "regular" people (i.e. anyone that doesn't know them) and they've got to keep their face hidden in public.
Any thoughts?
Tim
BTW, HAPPY NEW YEAR! May it truly be better than the last one!

id say it caps at 1 but treat it like a debuff where the character dosent benefit from wearing a mask and gets periodically hassled about wearing one by like law enforcement and when trying to enter areas where its impolite or impracticable especially when not using the disguise skill to better blend in

imagine walking into a bank with a ski mask and you get my mental image, it should still be awkward walking around with one on but for the most part he should be able to get around relatively fine when in places that wont make concealing the face a crime and dont forget to include the identity concealment aspect into interactions with bounty hunters

What if the appearance isn't due to his or her face, but the overall monstrosity-ness of their bod? How on earth do you hide that? Is the Appearance trait really all about facial looks? It would seem so... especially in an environment full of truly freaky looking people.
And could a negative Appearance have a benefit, such as a bonus when trying to intimidate or scare people? Maybe there should be a chart for negative traits. Even a negative Strength could have a benefit like an increased agility or maybe an increased intelligence?
Just a thought. Cheers!

Several times in the various books for TME it mentions the GM can use 2 APP scores, one for facial & one for overall (Rock Hudson face on a 7 limb monstrosity with hairy body boils comes to mind) but it was always just suggested if such specifics were acceptable to the GM's specific style of play.
Personally a pretty/hideous face don't matter if you look like a mutant octopus with a skin condition from the neck down. Ugly is ugly, face, body, or all of it, most folks don't separate one's face from their overall judgement when it comes to looks. I personally don't use the separate APP idea. Since mutants have so many potential physical alterations using only the Hub Rules (& even more nightmarish mutant types coming in the Expansion Rules) that our current concept of "beauty" is inapplicable to a character from the TME time period. These people would have grown up seeing mutants, variant species, & the results of mutagenic radiation & bio/chem agents running rampant in the ecology for 150+ years. Only the Purists/Pure Home humans would still retain any semblance of our current concept of beauty & honestly who cares what they think? Amoral biological bigots & psychotic pseudo-religious fanatics are not my idea of good social opinion-setters.
