Slavers:
The PC's had agreed to help a down on his luck mutant in Pitford. Todka wanted revenge on a slaver in Overpass for taking his house, wife and daughter; in that order. The group never found the girls but did track down Lt. Maverick in his favorite bar along with his gang of strong armed militiamen. The Lt. lies dead on the floor ofSalvager's Pub Sky Marshal's Bar along with his men and 2 cooks. Mavericks little black book of coded slave transactions was taken back to Pitford in hopes of translating it there.
Guided back alley tours:
On the way back to their airship, they were introduced to the locals. 10 roustabouts offered to show the group Overpass hospitality, but the price was a bit steep. It cost the thugs their lives. First time one of the PC's "cut off a hand"; the guy made his END check and stopped to picked it up! The PC's were so impressed they offered him a job. He ran away, bleeding..
Army training, sir!:
Safely back in Pitford, the PC's are approached by the Freehold Scouts. Word is getting around about the team's good deeds. They gladly joined and underwent an accelerated training course, boot camp and obtained news of the local area. The 'Scouts had been keeping tabs on groups, good and bad. The PC's were asked to keep their job of running airmail, but secretly gather intel about local groups.
One of us:
Piloting an airship, having a permanent base in Pitford, freeing slaves and defeating raiders is all starting to catch up to the guys. People recognize them at bars and new diggers approach regularly wanting to join. This game, they actually took on a new member. Cleo was a local working girl, just trying to rise up out of her surroundings and find a better life.
While patrolling the wastes their airship was attacked by a Purist blimp. After 11 rounds punctured the enemy, their ship softly crashed and two of the crazier characters jumped on the deflating balloon, like an air bag. Slicing through it with swords, they entered the cabin and proceeded to mop up 10 Purist scouts.
Moving booty back to their airship, our heroes found Miss Cleo had been perforated by a stray .50 cal round from the enemy. Having left the medbot back in Pitford, none of the group had any skill beyond Erotic Arts. Cleo died leaving a stain on morale.
Ashes to Ashes:
Randy Mandibles was closest to their fallen teammate and decided to pay for a 1,200 sp funeral service in Pitford. Zack Longjaw arranged an "extravagant memorial service, catering from Tyler’s Eatery, wine, beer or vodka for up to 30 people" (Pit, pg 90). They had the room for 3 hours. As a sign of goodwill, the team invited any from the brothel where Ms. Cleo worked to attend and say a few words. 7 beautiful young ladies attended the service. The Onyx Avenger (PC) noticed that they must also work in the kitchen because their handkerchiefs smelled like onions. They tried to honor their fallen sister, but could barely find words past the tears. "Although "Sylvia" was short in stature, she had a commanding presence with that flame red hair and you could lean on her for support", said one. "Tiffany" was a statuesque blond beauty and we all sure looked up to her", cried another.. An older woman who seemed in charge of the girls made inquiries on the cost of the gathering and approached Randy. If he was able to provide such love in his heart for "Gretchen" who he knew only a brief time, perhaps he would like to adopt another. She has been wanting to branch out and open another brothel in a nearby town. Would he like to invest?
Randy allowed 3 of the young ladies to console him and even though he couldn't find all of his valuables the next morning, he thought the money was well spent.
Back on track: Meeting again with Todka, he was able to confirm that some of Maverick's coded entries were for slave transactions. Traveling back to Overpass, the group found much stricter security, but flashing their Freehold Scout papers (and nothing placing them at the scene of 2 multiple homicides) found the town welcoming their silver. The good hearted Onyx Avenger purchased 8 slaves matching the descriptions of mother and daughter and 2 male slaves to boot.
PC discussion:
"What are we going to do with this many slaves? If you free them here, someone will just grab them again. Our blimp can't take everyone and there's no room in our Pitford apartment; plus it still smells like cheap hookers. If only there was some place nice and friendly that we knew about where they could live in peace.. Man can't think of anyplace..)
Gentle GM reminders:
After buying 2 wagons and 4 horses, they drove their newly freed slaves to Walsave; it being closer and safer than Pitford. On the way, they passed a few wagons of friendly families taking produce to market. Asking Benwad to help them along as best he could, they had a plan. The PC's had been granted a broccoli tree farm just outside of town as compensation after the team helped with the Mall of Doom. Although the land is fertile, no one was able to work the farm. If these now free-peoples wished, they could live free and work. Before they could say no, Benwad offered them a hot meal with a nights rest and they could decide in the morning.
Getting back on the road, the team headed back to Overpass; parking an airship can get expensive. In the distance, they saw smoke from 3 wagons. Through rifle scopes, the men had single shots to the head or chest and no women were in sight. It was the friendly farmers they passed on the road! One man was just barely alive to say "they called themselves "Marauders".. The PC's loaded him in their wagon (leaving one back in Walsave) and tried to find help on the road. They didn't have high hopes of saving him, but they had to try.
About 2 miles ahead, Klank (PC; Military Clone Sniper), noticed a reflection. He caught sight of a man in military fatigues looking in their direction with binoculars! At almost the same time, the other diggers saw a wagon about a mile away. In front of the wagon, men with guns popped up out of the ground from hidden holes and shot the men in the wagon, pulling out the women and sorting them into groups.
"This was likely the same Marauders that attacked those friendly farmers!" gasped Onyx. The group was dead set on preventing any more slavery today. In one motion, Randy leaps from the wagon, unhitches one horse and rides towards the man on the hill. (Randy saw him talking into a radio through his rifle scope.) The rest of the team ride their wagon towards the slavers attacking the wagon.
Firing at the raiders from extreme range, the PC's just wanted them to stop harming the civilians and keep their heads down.
They then realized the forward observer on the hill might not have even noticed them and was directing others on the success of the slave attack. Slavers at the wagon dropped down, taking cover from even a lucky shot by the PC's. Klank is an absolute crack shot with his Laser Carbine. Between Klank, Onyx and Shock (PC Cyborg), they were able to kill the slavers before getting into close range. They found the women already hand cuffed and some had their tongues cut out. But the wounds were years old.. One of the women mumbled the word "trap" and collapsed.
They jumped back into their wagon and rode as hard as the horse could pull them after Randy toward the hill.
By the Power of Frenzy:
With 5 skill points in Riding, Randy was forcing his horse to run ever faster. After closing a mile, he started hearing shots whizz past his head. A little trick riding, armor and a ballistics vest allowed him to close another mile, right up the hill.
The forward observer radioed for backup and an ariel platform with 2 men and 2 machine guns screamed towards the PC's wagon. It was a cross between a gyrocopter and a biplane (large Green Goblin style flying platform). At extreme range the wings mike-mikes started chewing up the ground.
Klank stopped the wagon, aimed his carbine and let them get closer. One shot crit'd their engine. With 10 points in Rifle, he almost never misses. The next knocked it out of the sky. Gravity was unforgiving.
While racing towards the hill, Randy sees more military helmets and barrels poking out from cover. 5 shooters take aim on Randy. Radio man with auto pistol; missed! Another with an assault rifle missed! A third had set up an M60 and barely grazed the horse. Randy aced his riding roll and kept on. 2 more shooters finally hit Randy; minor damage and it just makes him mad. Everyone was waiting for that one roll which would send Randy to that bath house in the sky. I was rolling everything in the open that night. We couldn't believe his luck. Jumping to the other side of his horse for better cover, he kept on.
A smart shooter would have just shot the horse at this point. I rolled; gave them a 70% chance to do the smart thing and they decided to keep aiming at the rider. OK.
He was able to ride up the hill with his armor and ballistics vest saving him over and over.
At the top of the hill, he went into Berserker Rage and jumped from his horse.
Rolling morale, as this was pretty intimidating, 2 broke ranks and started to run.
Randy had simultaneous init with three others. Auto pistol, machine gunner and assault rifle guys stood their ground.
Pistol backs up to shoot, rifle aims right for his chest and Machine gunner tries to parry the slashing mandibles.
Right before he leaps, he pulls his shotgun.
"You have a shotgun? What kind?"
"It says here '8 gauge, but I've never used it".
Me and the other player exchange glances.
Randy obliterates one assailant while taking a solid hit from the assault rifle.
I rolled our large, red, light up D20 for damage and it blinks "20"!
The player gives a sigh and says, "it was a fun character.."
"Let's do the numbers", I say. He's at... -15 END; "Incapacitated and Dying".
Per the book, he could go to -23 before dead, but he was Berserk!
"You're still standing, by yourself and there's enemies close by"..
They all fall down:
A short time later, the other PC's drove their wagon up the hill and found Randy, covered in blood, multiple gunshot wounds and surrounded by dead Marauders. His eyes were open, he had a pulse and was laughing.
Only dropping 1END/min, he was still above -23. He'd be dead at -24. The others applied first aid and he stopped dropping. It'll be a long time before they can move him. Maybe they'll find a medkit in the Marauders vehicles on this side of the hill.
We stopped there, for the night.
