Question about locations in the various books.....
by Xhaosdaemon » Fri Nov 18, 2011 10:09 pm
So the Pitford preview book, The Mall of Doom adventure, and The Mutant Epoch Hub Rules all seem to imply that their locations are set somewhere on the west coast, near The Great Ruins. In the interest of coming up with some type of a map for my upcoming online chat game I am curious what exactly The Great Ruins are (I am guessing either San Francisco or Los Angeles) and from there where Pitford, Crossroads (is that actually a city/town?), Overpass, and Walsave are located both in regards to each other and to The Great Ruin. I don't know if there is some kind of preview map available that I could get my hands on but if not just some general geographic info would go far...

Since I am unaware of any available maps and info is somewhat sketchy in the books I took a stab at creating my own map.....feel free to critique it:

Ink Map of The Crossroads Region map
I've been reluctant to show this map yet as the accompanying text, encounters, NPCs and regional history aren't available for TME gamers to access. I had hoped to have the Crossroads Region book out by now, as well as the Pitford Gateway to the Ruins book, but the monthly magazine has been taking up nearly all my attention. These large source books are written and in final edit and layout, but the interior art isn't completed. To make more time for these large books and the adventures based around Pitford and Overpass, and elsewhere in the region, we are only producing two more issues of Excavator Monthly and then going with Excavator Quarterly, which will be 88 or more pages and go into more robust articles and possibly include full length adventures.
So, my apologies for not having the gazetteer out yet, but it is coming and well along the path to publication. In the meantime, the 10 x 10" 150 dpi regional map here might help. Walsave is just to the west of Overpass. I'll print this now and see if this is a large enough map to read using a home based inkjet printer. Otherwise I might load 4 sections of the map that can be taped together to form one big wall map...
Yes, the map by Xhaosdaemon above is excellent and I love the craters. The map is very accurate as far as the layout of the towns go, too. The Crossroads Region is situated over Las Angeles, however he LA of the future sprawled north and south for many kilometers, annexing smaller cities and becoming the greater LA district. Sea reclamation projects also extended the mega city out into the Pacific Ocean where man made islands still exist in the Mutant Epoch era (Atolls Region, also in production with near completed 3d hand sculpted map).

Thanks for the preview map, I love how it looks. Can I ask what program was used to create it or was it drawn by hand then scanned? Also, what is the scale on that map (1 inch equals 10 km?)? Through guesswork it seems I did OK with the placement of the towns, just put the Dominion of Aberratia to the east instead of the west. For the curious I took a satellite image of the LA area via google and used GIMP to put in the craters, towns, and names......fortunately it wouldn't be that hard to correct the location of Aberratia.

Here is the same map with a 10km hex grid on it. Now... we may need to adjust the exact distance for the published product, but think this is a good start.
150 dpi ten inches on each side for printing at home.
Enjoy

Thanks for the map with the hexes. An observation however, 10 km per hex seems a bit on the large side. The reason I say that is at that scale according to the map Overpass is 10 km wide and the cloverleafs on the ruined highways are 30 km wide. FREX on my map (which I know is hardly canon....lol), it is about 20 km from the major ruins crater to the ocean whereas on your map with the 10 km/hex scale it is over 200 km to the ocean. That strikes me as a huge scale difference. Just checked Google maps, central LA is about 20 km from the ocean. So I am guessing that a more realistic scale would be 1 km per hex (solely based on current day maps.....feel free to boot me in the noggin' if I am being too nitpicky....that is my OCD popping out)....just my thoughts/observations.

Yeah, I was wondering about the scale , too. I just didn't want to these growing factions to be o close that they could shoot at each other's capitals with hunting rifles. Maybe 5km per hex? The land area of LA was pushed out to sea through land reclamation, too. Geological changes have really distorted the pre-devastation layout as well.
I welcome your thoughts on this process, especially with the maps and rules and such.
I've only been to LA once and wish I had taken more reference photos.

Hey that's what Google maps and the satellite image option is for....you can zoom down to street level in some places. Looking at the satellite map I could see each hex being equal to 2 km, making it just about 50 km from The Great Ruins to the ocean. That would take into account the raising of the continental shelf just above sea level and land reclamation (did I mention I am a touch OCD?). Of course the ocean would drop off into the abyss just a few meters off shore (which would affect wave size significantly, but that is not important at the moment)...
That distance would still make it very difficult to shoot someone in Overpass from let's say The Twisted Wood. That would be about 2 km which is out of the effective range of rifles with the exceptions of the sniper rifle, .50 caliber sniper rifle, laser carbine (normal and heavy), rocket launchers, howitzers, and the laser cannons. All those weapons listed I would imagine to be among the rarest of the rare relics (maybe excepting the sniper rifle and perhaps laser carbines) so I wouldn't see it as a situation that come up often.....but it makes for a great adventure hook!
I am more than happy to get into rules discussion, just feel free to swat me if I overstep my bounds at all....lol
