The first six issues of Excavator Monthly are written, have their covers done and are in layout, but, the interior art is still in progress. Right now we are looking at the possibility of starting the magazine releases prior to the full version of Pitford Gateway to the Ruins; however, once we start the monthly magazine, it will be about half of what we accomplish each month and so slow the release of the other source books. Once The Mall of Doom is out we will have a much better idea of how quickly we can release books within our quality objectives.
That said, an issue of the magazine is going to be between 24 and 36 pages, instead of 120 pages as The Mall of Doom is ending up, so should be something we can pull off every month and still get a ton of work done on the other impending books and free SOE content.
Stay tuned,
WM

A monthly magazine seems pretty aggressive. Not to say don't try it but for me a quarterly mag would be more than enough.

We considered going quarterly, and a monthly is going to be a lot of work, but, I am full time at this now and the first six issues are basically written and much of the art done, plus, I have a lot of freelancers at this end for issues 7-12.
I am so stoked about the magazine that its going to be hard to work on the Pitford book next, and we are looking at the work load of somehow starting the magazine right away while simultaneously doing the town setting and other free SOE content that is due out.
Going monthly was also a promotional tactic. In April, the sales for The Mutant Epoch were excellent so long as it was on the first page of RPGnow and Drivethru rpg, we got to and stayed around the top 25 of 100 downloads for a couple of weeks, and we know from our own experience and that of other publishers that whenever you release a new product, people buy from your blacklist. A monthly magazine also keeps people's focus on the game, and we are all huge fans of the old Dragon Magazine and I wanted to sort of capture that feel. Also, what says 'well supported' for a game system better than having a monthly magazine? I think a lot of people are hesitant to try out a new system, especially one without supplements, so EM should help with fence sitters.
Excavator Monthly is going to be a blast to create, illustrate and use at my own game table, and believe it will be seen as an excellent value, be entertainment and inspiration rich and full of usable game resources.
I'll keep you all posted on this thread as we are starting to get the interior art for issues 1 and 2 of excavator Monthly. We might also be seeing sketches from one of our artists for issue 7 in the next couple of weeks.

Excellent reasons to go monthly, good on ya.
I only thought quarterly as I didn't want you to get burned out. I'm already hooked so I'll be one of those peeps buying up your product.

Hi Gwarh,
Thanks for the encouraging words!
After the Pitford book is out this summer, we will be releasing Excavator Monthly issues early each month from then on, and continuously working on the larger books at a slightly slower pace.
