Our First Foray into The Mall of Doom
by madwill » Mon Jul 18, 2011 1:54 am
Well the adventure is under way. the first hour was getting all the characters organized ( we had almost a half dozen written on scraps of paper and order tickets as some were rolled up in the local coffee shop.) without hesitation they started exploring. i won't detail too much for fear of spoiling the adventure for others. the party had to return to Walsave to recoup and distribute relics as they found something they were looking for. then next weekend it's once more into the breach.

Well I'd like to hear about your group's adventures! Just put "Spoiler Alert" in the heading before you reveal any secrets. ; )

*****SPOILERS FOLLOW BELOW*****
After an extended break due to vacations and family events our group has finally made it to the mall of doom itself.
They have explored almost a quarter of the mall having dealt with some minor encounters and a tunnel collapse and took note of the relics they found, leaving most where they found them so they could recover them later. The group ended up fortifying one of the stores and rested for a time to let some stun damage heal. Luckily, no encounters happened. As they worked their way back to the village to tend to the more serious injuries a hunting party of moaners ambushed them as they exited the narrow passage to the junction pond room. the panic that ensued resulted in the disappearance of two characters (one who was grabbed at the onset and one who fell holding the rear guard as the rest ran back down the tunnel. when the party finally dared to go back (they waited some time to see if they were followed) they found a pool of blood and drag marks. choosing not to follow the trail they headed back to the village where they were met by a very nervous Benwad and an unfriendly populace (the party has been here almost a week and have only rescued one captive, Benwad’s daughter....). the rest of the council, seeing that Benwad has lost control of the situation has hired their own mercenaries to help ensure investigation goes faster.
Back down in the junction room they followed the blood trail and drag marks. i had remembered that there was a random ladder that could be rolled in the underground forest, so, i had the moaners retreat with two captives up the ladder and hide in a crawlspace under the town church as they felt their usual way to the mall was blocked by the party. the moaners were planning to hide until dark then slip out of the village and use other secret passages to get the prisoners back to the mall. As the party followed the trail through the underground forest they were shadowed by a giant dragonfly who was looking for stragglers. Eventually finding the somewhat hidden ladder they ascended. fighting off a hunting party of rubble spiders too easily (the spiders needed a 30 or less to hit but out of 4 rounds of combat i could not roll one single hit.. i swore then and there rubble spiders have left the game in shame, never to be seen again) the ladder led to a small tunnel which ended with another short ladder. the lead party member climbed the ladder and pushed the sheet metal cover aside and was promptly grabbed and pummeled by the hiding moaners, who now were fighting desperately as they were trapped. The ensuing fight was a close quarter melee in the near dark with the party trying to force their way into the crawlspace. Once one handed firearms were brought into play (auto pistols and shotgun pistols) the fight was quickly ended. Sadly, one of the prisoners was killed by a stray shotgun blast (the player rolled a fumble and i randomly determined which captive pc was hit)
the village was alerted by the yelling, screaming and gunshots coming from under the Christian church. The militia poured in and removed to floorboards only to find a battered and bloody party and six dead moaners. This bought the party some time as it looked like they stopped another tunnel from opening up. And seeing finally the menace that lurks below them has made the villagers even more afraid now.
Back down they went to investigate the reptilius village again (the first time they had a skirmish with them and retreated) working their way into the village they quickly defeated it's in habitants in hopes of finding the missing villagers. Searching the village they found little save for a head mounted flashlight some pistol rounds and a full set of combat armor. Using the now empty village as a resting spot they are gearing up for one more assault on the mall.
Well, that's were our adventure stands so far, almost a week with little success, a scared and hostile populace and Benwad losing most of his influence.

****SPOILERS FOLLOW BELOW****
I had forgotten to write about last weekends adventure. It was pretty uneventful. They found a woman bound hanging from a wall with barbed wire which was an ambush set by the moaners. After the fight they took her back to the village and rested.
hmmm how to express how i feel about how tonight’s adventure went. "HOLY MOTHER OF GOD!!" comes to mind.
when i last left the party they were tracking a group of moaners who had raided the village during the night as the party was recuperating. no one having tracking made it difficult, but, they did follow it enough to find were they left over the village wall only to lose it completely beyond that. ( had more skill they would have uncovered one of the adventure’s secrets.....)
so, back down into the mall they went. going to the last store they had explored. after being locked in the medical clinic and assaulted my the med-bots they crossed the mall and found themselves in front of the menswear store. following their usual protocol the character in the combat armor lead the way followed by the rest of the party save the two who stay outside as lookouts. as the party started moving amongst the clothing racks and moldy clothes i describe how the beam from the lead characters flashlight catches a small figure dressed in rags moving through the fallen racks. upon hearing this one player declares she's firing with her assault shotgun. after i confirm this truly is her action she rolls to hit ( her SV with the shotgun is 95....). i tell them they see the small figure flying back into the rack from the force of the shotgun blast. upon closer examination it was a pure stock child who had escaped as was approaching them to see if they could take him back to the village. poor little Jim to lastic. at this sight the parties collective jaw dropped. But, after much anguish, and maybe a little finger pointing, they searched the rest of the store to find a badly damaged heavy combat robot with a grenade launcher still attached to it's shoulder. the thought of relic grenades pushed out any remorse for the accidental death of poor little jim to as they decided who was going to examine and remove the grenade launcher from the robot twisted frame. At this point i decided to make things interesting and ran with the chance of a grenade exploding. Normally it detonates on a "1" if someone unskilled tries it. i extended that to any skilled player missing the tech roll badly.
Both techs examining it rolled in the high 90's and one of the following rolls was a "1" so, I rolled to see how many grenades detonated. low and behold, 5 out of 6 touched off killing two characters (one was a cyborg with a self destruct mechanism. that player wasn't here tonight so i had one of the players roll randomly so see what the trigger was. luckily, he didn't roll "detonates upon death" which could have possibly made it a TPK.
as they recovered from the explosions and looted the dead companions ( that's actually in the group charter) a group of moaners came to investigate the commotion which resulted in a chase as the party fled to a more defensible store. After a brief fight they made their way back to the village to heal and keep mum about what really happened down there.
