Priest?
by Brutorz Bill » Sat May 28, 2011 4:07 pm
Anybody see the movie Priest?
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Priest_(2011_film)
I recently went to see it, its a Post Apocalyptic alternate Earth wherein endless war between humans and vampires has turned the Earth into a wasteland.
I was a bit disappointed in the movie, it was kinda short, and could have been so much better. However, I can see some stuff to loot for a Mutant Epoch Campaign. In the movie the Catholic Church has taken over society, and in the past created an elite force of warriors (Priests) to fight the vampires. A few of those warriors remain, and realize the vampire menace has returned.
In a Mutant Epoch sense, I can see working up an Isolated Hi-Tech Enclave of Pure Stock Humans, with a similar theocratic society. Maybe they have created a force of Trans-Human Priests (fully indoctrinated into the Church's doctrine) to fight their wars for them (keep the mutants/machines at bay etc. while the Pure Stock Humans "hide" behind the Enclave's walls, letting no outsiders inside).
Thoughts?

I like the sound of this pure stock enclave. Would they recruit cyborgs and synthetic humans? Plus, a few ghost mutants might be born into their population and need to hide their powers until they day they can escape and explore the outside world for the first time. Might be fun to have a character group of pure stock appearing PCs try to bust out, or infiltrate the place as mercenaries.
I think I'll see Priest just for the idea mining.
Movie reviews are a great addition to this part of the forum. Thanks for starting things!

I like the idea of the pure stocks using synthetics to protect the enclave. In a time where humanity has its back against the wall it would make sense not to waste the stock on warfare. Cyborgs would be cool too. I would be tempted to use cyborgs as a penance for humans who commit crimes within the enclave, or may taint the gene pool. If one wanted to be really dark...the enclave could carve away physical mutations literally, and replace them with cybernetic implants to "purify" them. I generally dislike vampire films, but I may have to see this film now.

Awesome ideas, this Purist Enclave is really starting to take shape for me. I can see C.H.U.D.'s point, Pure Strains must be protected… so Synthetics are the perfect replacement (cannon fodder), with the whole Cyborg Penance angle fitting perfectly! The Ghost mutant angle suggested by William is spot on as well. Nice!
I'm tired of the whole vampire thing also, but replacing vampires with Mutants and such give it a different angle.
Also in the movie the church took some of the few surviving vampires from the last war and put them in secured hi-tech reservations (prisons). Maybe in our version, a few "special" mutants the church has a possible need for are put on one of these secured reservations (guarded by bio-replicas). The players could be sent to free one of these mutants, only to wind up with more than they bargained for.

Nice.
Prisons for special mutants. Lab rats? Gladiatorial entertainment?
I like where this is going.

I'm looking for suggestions as to what to call this enclave/community? In the movie it was called Cathedral City if my memory serves me correctly. I don't really see this as a full fledged city.
Ideas?

I got to go see this movie. My wife and I have 4 kids so it is hard to get a baby sitter so we often wait until things come out on DVD... or lately, on netflix.
The Enclave seems to be what everybody here is calling this place, maybe it would have a formal name, but locals and those living nearby might just refer to it as the Enclave. If it was a former military facility, or lab, it might just have a number designation like Site 13, Area 51, Bunker 88 or Location 6. Then again, the pure stock controllers might be trying to cheer things up a bit, give it a positive spin and call it something like Sunny Gate, Paradise City, Prosperity, Fort Green, Blue Water, or Port Harmony.
Wish I could sit down with you guys, and a pint of beer and explore this place... with one of you as the GM.

I remember those days, now my kids are either grown or teenagers.

William, I would love to have you over, come on down for some Southern Hospitality! The heat might be a bit much for you to get used too... Heat Index this week will pass the 100 mark, especially if you factor in the humidity.
Thanks for creating such a cool game!

Thanks Brutorz Bill,
Yeah, I am okay with the dry heat we have here in Kamloops, which gets extremely hot in July and August, but the humidity just saps my energy. I've been to Florida and that was astoundingly hot, but I think the ocean must moderate the temperature. Kamloops is in a sort of desert area actually, we have little cactus, rattlesnakes, coyotes and such, but once one drives up out of the valley, the forests start where there are moose, cougar and bear. To the north there is a mountain that still has snow on that we can see from our living room, where there are caribou and grizzly bear.
You know a southern themed region would be very cool and much needed.

Snow capped mountain from your living room! WOW that sounds amazing!
I've got some notes around here somewheres on The Green Hell, an area of overgrown extremely hot and humid vast Kudzu Jungles, that I placed in the Post Apocalyptic ruins of Mississippi.

As for the name of "The Enclave", I'm thinking about either going with Halo City or Salvation...
Thoughts??

I like both names, but Salvation seems to hold more promise, and yet ... creepy , too, knowing what has already been said about the place and how they treat non-pure stock individuals.

use both names. Salvation is what the residents call it. "Halo City" is a derogatory name used by those who live outside it's walls.
