I came in here to ask for advice on how to take a part of the world, the US in my case, I thought interesting and Apocalypsising it. While I was trying to figure out how to convey my thoughts in a clear and understandable fashion... The how of it just hit me. I plan to find an old paper map or an image of one, preferably rough and worn looking, and then just scribble information on it about how the world had changed. Like someone trying to remap the area might have.
As I came up with a base idea I like I'll post anyway and hope for any tips I might get to do the job well and make an interesting area!

Heh, turns out its not so easy to find a suitable map on the internet. Google maps and the like are too cluttered and just dont have the right feel.

When you do find one that fits, you can always stress the paper if you want to give it that old world feel. Crumple it up a few times, soak it in tea or wine, burn the edges, poke/shoot a few holes in it.. Write something, a message or even another map in lemon juice (for example) and have it partially revealed by the scorched edges. Players have to actually take a flame, or gentle heat, to it to discover the hidden clue. If they aren't careful, they could burn the only copy..

I'm extremely broke or I probably would just buy the pre-made materials so I was actually looking on the net for something suitable. But I'm also very picky. I was looking for a broader area like a state sized map but most everything I find is either so featureless I disliked looking at it or so densely packed with bold street indicators and district names that there would be no room to write myself.
I was hoping to find a state map that displayed towns, cities and major highways along with stylized depictions of the terrain. But that seems to be pretty rare or Im just not figuring out what to look for. At this point Im considering just using googlemaps to look at and using some vector based program to redo it all myself.

Hi Roh maybe this can help you. It's from my first big TME campaign. I took a screenshot from google maps, the area to the south of Phoenix . Added a couple of bullet holes, some "blood" and some towns. Not very elaborate but that did the trick! I've spent aLOT of hours in those unfriendly arid lands . mutantepochforum.boards.net/attachment/download/19If you want more details/ ideas, ask away

Oh man. I am glad you shared that just for the smile I enjoyed on seeing Barter Town in the middle of the map!
