Well i was looking over the book as my players explored Overpass, and for such a big city, it seems very...civilian. From the looks of it it's mostly residential housing, and libraries, universities, etc. Very few places built for excavators like pitford. So is this just the big hub city for people to live mostly peacefully rather than a town built off of excavating like pitford? Or is it left open for the GM?

In my opinion, everything is up to the GM. :-)
I was amazed at the militarization of Overpass. Pg 48 and 49 tell a different story than what's in the text. Woe unto anyone who attacks that place.

I suppose overpass has some great defenses, i mean i definitely see it as that place where just about anyone is tolerated, where you go to settle down after a long life of excavating. So they'd have grizzled old vets and young fit adventurers alike to come to arms when the time arises. Plus all those god damn laser cannons and machineguns sure help.

It does seem excessive, right? How many places had to be excavated, with their innards looted, hauled and repaired to get that level of security.. In the main book Tech skills are rare. This town would need every kind and then some. An entire trade/guild society shouldn't be a far stretch. Just maintaining the "bioweapons" alone would be a feat. But it sounds like they need constant Biotech care.
Can't believe lasers are powered by wind/solar either, but that's just me. The larger energy weapons would take a month to recharge without more land being used outside the walls as a power grid.
So, why so much muscle in one area? I'm saying they've kickstarted an old fusion reactor.. That should be fun for my PC's if/when the word gets out. :-)

The more I think about it.. There is a good bit of info on this subject under the Noxtoth NPC on pg 432 (Cross.)
(In Ventura, he Killed raider kids over many months and then turned 7. So he starts as a bad ass.)
Noxtoth joined the militia in Overpass and then became an adult. (This place is so violent that it will accept children into the militia. Pg 28 tells us that militia carry crossbows, daggers and machetes. I'll assume at least 1 point WE in each but maybe higher to qualify.)
Once he became an adult (age 18 is standard in ME pg 17, but could be lower in some areas.) he joined the military (where he would have to pick up WE musket) and was integral to winning a "series of daring battles" with Purists and Aberationists . There were over 12 battles where he actually "saved the day for the struggling city". In my mind, this implies more than just a skirmish.
Turning 37, he "guided Overpass to glory a hundred times". Major battles..
(100-12 he's already fought = 88 heavy combats in 19 years. 1 every 2.6 months if we use averages.) (No, I'm wrong. I think it's after turning 37, so that would be 1 combat every 2.3 months on average.)
Overpass is a violent place and I think it gets attacked far more than Pitford. I picture a "police state" kind of place.
