So... I've just created what's turning out to be quite the awesome "typical" mutant who unfortunately can't swim. No big deal... except for the fact that he's an amphibian. Now, I know that sometimes random character generation can create conflicts, and there's no way you could possibly account for them all and include rules to cover situations like this, and that's understandable. In my opinion, I would change the "can't swim" to at least one category higher, say...Poor Swimmer. Your opinion, oh mighty lord of the Mutant Realm? LOL.
By the way, how's it going?

I agree with that Tim. You cant have an amphibian that doesnt know how to swim it would just be weird. Or required to much home made back story to explain why he cant swim. I personally would roll again on the chart until i got something other then cant swim and go with that. Swimming is to much of an integral part to an amphibian character to leave it out.

I remember a pitiful creature in the original GW rpg. It was short, had feet for hands.. it was basically saying some chargens aren't viable. I thought it was well done.

Holy smokes, Prov... I remember that. It was a picture, right? In the example of a so-called untenable creature, right?

Hi aardvark892!
It sure is strange for an amphibian mutant to be unable to swim but I'd like to think that it could be possible. It could be the starting point for an hilarious background story ( or even a dramatic one! ).
If I made the rules I would have let the player roll twice and keep one of the resulting numbers. This way you could still get an amphibian which can't swim but the odds would be like 1%.

Hi lads, At my table, the first mutation is fixed, and any mutation that negates, overwrites or blocks an earlier rolled (and thus already written down and looked-up)mutation is re-rolled as you all have agreed. For example, if a character has claws, then another mutation rolls crab pincers, then any human arms remaining would be clawed, however if the crab pincer replace arms, then re-roll as at least one clawed hand should remain. Another example might be a beastial human eagle who happens to have mutations and rolls wings! Either the GM could call a re-roll, or, the eagle could have two sets of wings (freakin'cool!) and be more maneuverable and perhaps much faster. If you are rolling up characters by yourself, and aren't sure whether to keep an unlikely mutation combo or not, then flip a coin whether to keep the second one or not. An amphibious creature that can't swim might actually work, as it would simply walk across the bottom of streams and lakes. Somebody like that could have grown up in a bunker or desert area without water, but once reaching the Crossroads Region (Pacific Coastline) would be able to practice endlessly without the fear of drowning! Predators would be another story. BTW, that homage to the Gamma World game site was wicked! I just spent an hour there this Sunday morning with my coffee. Going to add that link in the next way overdue newsletter! Thanks! www.headinjurytheater.com/gammaworld.htm
