I'd like to ask you guys how do you handle melee situation exactly. Page 104 of the Hub Rules states : " For example, as part of a much larger battle scene, if four human excavators engage 12 skullocks in a melee, each human faces off against 3 skullocks in a sort of mini-battle of his own. Assign odd numbered opponents randomly. When it comes time for the defenders to make their strike rolls, the same number of surviving skullocks would then attack their assigned excavator. This process is repeated until one side in the mini-scrap is slain." Does this mean that players can not help each other in melee combat until one "mini scrap" is resolved? They can make a fighting withdrawal or run away, as stated some pages after that one, but moving in another melee fight is a bit different I think. My PCs always move to help weaker teammates, even if this means turning their backs to the enemy. The standard formation they use is a "square" with every side 3m long. This way they can enter in a near mini-scrap and make one melee attack in one round . Battle Example ( LOL) <---3m--- (lemme help you buddy!) What do you think guys? Shouldn't there be a turn/SV/DV penalty for this maneuver? (maybe I missed something in the rub rules!)

Hey maxstone, If I understand your question correctly, I'll share what I think about it. "Target has back turned, but is already engaged in combat +30" pg 105. If you are already occupied and your back is to an enemy, they get +30 SV, at least. I myself don't see how you can use agility or Dodge to improve DV either. Maybe if you had extra eyes/heads.. If your PC's ignore their facing enemies to nobly help friends, well, +30 is a big bonus and they'll get hit and hit hard, eventually. "Target fleeing from attacker, back turned +20" assumes you're not engaging another enemy, in my humble opinion. It's no different than the one above, except you're not as distracted. This one appears important to your question: "Attacker making fighting withdrawal (moves backward half movement rate) -20 SV/ +10 SV to be struck*" * See Breaking from melee rules, pg 107. That paragraph has some good stuff pertaining to the situation. Opponents don't have to always attack until destroyed or until their selected enemy is defeated. Sometimes morale breaks and they try to run away. This fight might be a distraction. Sleestaks might fight you with axes until the guys with nets circle around behind you. Enemy could be counting coup.. It doesn't have to be like the book describes. The enemy can gang up on the PC's too! Love your example with the smileys.

Thanks man I was curious about this because some of my PCs have a lot of healt (about 100 END at rank 3, plus a very high DV ) and always try to cover allies in melee scraps and even shield them in firefights! This way it's hard to make them feel in real danger but yes, the +30SV for the enemy when strinking from behind should balance the fight.

You know, with that good a bonus it would be possible for opponents to target specific areas on PC's. Hamstring, weapon arm, equipment.. You can hurt them in more ways than just END.

Haha Providence, you're tempting me! I'd really like to amputate a hand to one of my PCs, I think it would be fun as hell! ( at least for me !). I just fear it would put the group in serious trouble and lead them to the bitter end. Have you ever done this in an epoch campaign?

I've not cut off a hand, yet. Even if I did, it's possible that the group could acquire a cyber hand. If Randy Mandibles lost his primary attack, it would be a big deal. I think he has about 12 skill points in Huge Mandibles! The player is pretty mature so I don't think it would crush his ego too much. It would be a setback for the group, taking out one of their more powerful weapons. ..... Cyber Mandibles! Hmmmm..
