Computer Technician / Robotics Technician Table
by pansophy » Tue Sep 27, 2011 5:37 am
Hi there,
one question: a character having Computer Technician Level 4 does also get 2 Robotics Skill Points. But: Table TME- 1-50 Robotics Technician Table does not list Computer Technician ... which entry am I to use?
Cheers!

Hi,
Yes, on the far right of table 1-50 the computer and electrical tech skills begin to creep in at 3rd skill point. We figured that one picks up a bit of other related skills by trial and error, reading manuals, watching others, and common sense during the course of a technician's career.
Please feel free to tweak these tables and add other technician skills in your campaign. Some skills that didn't survive into the 24th century were cosmetic technician and hair replacement technician, among only a few which didn't directly assist in day to day survival.

Hi Will,
thanks for your answer, but I am more to the "Robotics Technician" Table. It lists different Skill levels:
No training
Mechanical 1-2
Mechanical 3-4
Mechanical 5 & up
Electrical 1-2
Electrical 3-4
Electrical 5 & up
1 10
2 15
3 20
4 25
5 30
6 35
7
But there is no entry for the "Computer Technician". So, do I use one of the Mechanical or Electrical entry, or do I use the "Full" skill point, as if my character is trained in "Robotics"?
cheers,

Hi Pansophy,
Sorry for the delay in getting back to you. Been camping and at a convention, then camping again. Back now for the long Canadian winter.
I am afraid I am misunderstanding your question about table 1-50 Robotics Technician. My take on it is you are wondering if the slight gain in other related skills for a robotics technician also includes the computer technician skill? If so, on that table it just shows Computer skill points, which is just short for Computer Technician skill points. The robotics technician picks up 1 skill point in computer tech and one each in electrical and mechanical tech when reaching the 3rd skill point as a robotics tech. Of course, if the PC also has the computer, electrical or mechanical technician skill then these skill points don’t' stack with the related skills... unless the GM deems it so at his or her table, since the GM is a Demi-God.

no, the "Robotics Technician" Table does not list "Computer Technician" in one of the rows. It lists all the other Technician Skills in a separate row, but not the Computer Technician. So which row do I use?

I see what you mean now, jeesh, I need more sleep. Or at least I did way back when we were back and forth on this post in 2011!
Under the far left column of table TME-1-50, page 54 of the TME hub rules, “Robotics Tech Skill Points”, the Mechanical and Electrical technicians of certain skill begin to get robotics tech skill, while there is no sign of what robotics skill points and advanced Computer tech would get.
On the previous page, table 1-47 Computer technicians skill, on the far right is a column, showing that computer tech begin to pick up robotics each skill points at three skill points.
It was some time ago we designed this table, but I suspect we thought a computer technician wouldn't have the same hands on experience with actually working on robots or using their parts as would and new era electrician or mechanic, at least not until having 3 skill points. That said, the mechanical and electrical tech’s abilities on the robotics tech table are merely there to give some odds of those with related skills to do some repairs on robots, as well as attach or detach implants on cyborgs, robots and androids. As can be seen on the table, their abilities are modest compared to a correctly trained robotics technician.
Although, a mechanical technician does get one skill point in both robotics and electrical tech when gaining 3 skill points as a mechanic, making no need for the mention of mechanical and electrical tech skill on the robotics table’s far left column.
Describing these tables with just text is probably confusing without holding the book in hand. I think in an upcoming reload of the hub Rules to PDF an Print, we will modify the robotics table to avoid this confusion.
In short, the customer is always right!
