this is a backrounder i came up with for a bestial human fox named Connor MacLeod (highlander reference ftw) to explain a) why he has a human name, and b)why he should have militia training.
anyway, dates and final location of the settlement are left to the GM to adapt to his/her setting.
hope you enjoy the tale, apologies for bad grammar, and the horrific storytelling.

This is the history of Foxkin of the Clan MacLeod as passed down from father to son and now on to you:
During the Great War of 2XXX, just before the Collapse, there were extraordinarily high losses in the Northern Co-Ordinate Union (North America and Europe) Army scouting division due to increasingly accurate silhouette targeting systems that locked on to the appearance of the human body in any known armour configuration.
Scotland had the answer: create disposable scouts that did not have a human silhouette. This meant using an animal of some kind, but none had the higher reasoning to be capable of the advanced communication of enemy unit descriptions, locations, and tactics.
Several trans-genetic projects were undertaken in the utmost secrecy and the Red Fox of Britain showed the most promise. In 2XXX+5, the First Born were decanted and began training under General William MacLeod. They showed considerable promise, and made quite the impression upon the drill instructors who began giving them names and calling the Foxkin by them instead of their operating numbers. In 2XXX+7, the 2597th Scout Regiment first saw service. Casualties were high, but well within operating parameters as the survival instincts of the Foxkin had been honed to a razor sharp edge by the “elite” military training they had been provided.
Just prior to the Collapse, a contingent of the 2597th were en route to the “X”-front when everything was destroyed. With no orders, and no enemy, their training dictated setting up a defensible position and holding out until reinforcements arrived.
There they have remained to this day, trading equally with members of a nearby human settlement who assumes they are nothing but some foxkin who are enamoured with tartan and play at being soldiers as a large part of the defensible settlement lies underground and only a few foxholes are visible.
